Amanda: "I had a hairy upper lip."
My questions: I'm assuming this is a girl-- why hasn't she done anything about it yet? From the first line, we know we're dealing with a character who tells things like they are, which I'm all for.
Kaitlin: "Being dead rocks."
My questions: Besides the obvious confusion of being addressed by someone who's dead, I'm intrigued that they're glad to be that way.
My questions: Obviously we're talking something larger than your average shadow, and I'm wondering what the threat is and how Alex brought it on herself.
Amna: "I can feel their eyes on me."
My questions: I'm hoping this doesn't mean her MC is covered in real eyeballs. (Just kidding, Amna.) Who doesn't like the tease of a character who's the center of attention?
Sandy: "Yuki first learned of her match-making ability the day her mom left her dad for a man connected to her by a red thread."
My questions: Wow. So many questions in this one. How does she make matches? Did she purposely hook her mom up with someone else or was it an accident? The most intriguing to me is that red thread...
Leah Michelle: "When I was eleven years old, I purposely seared off the tips of my fingers with a scorched pan."
My questions: Why the hell did she do that?
Donna: "It’s just a little pink box, Maddy thought, trying to calm the twist of her stomach as she opened the front door to her house.""
My questions: Of course I want to know, in the immortal words of Kuni, "What's in the box?!?" For some reason I'm thinking birth control.
Karla: "Robin Hood. I hear that name countless times during the school day—halls, classrooms, lunch. They aren’t talking about the fictional character that takes from the rich and gives to the poor."
My questions: I can only assume that our MC is the Robin Hood in question, so I'm wondering what it is he steals. (Of course this is one I've read the summary of, so I already know, but it brings up a salient point: Namely, that short blurb on the back cover helps.)
Rules: Yes, you can vote for yourself. Vote as many times as the poll will let you, since I have no way to control it. :) Voting ends at midnight on Saturday. Thanks to everyone who played or votes!
PS. I know I promised to post my own first lines, and I will-- it just didn't seem to fit once I decided to make this a contest. Also, I'm agonizing over them and wanted to get this posted while it was still Tuesday. In retribution, I will post not only my intro, but a summary of Refuge in the next few days. Deal?
