Today: Lists. The lovely Sarah Enni has recruited a few of us to put together a few end-of-the-year lists-- not a best of 2010, per se, but a "this is what I recommended most so get with it people" kind of list. I had a wonky computer/imminent houseguests/broken brain FAIL yesterday, so today I'm combining Monday and Tuesday's topics.
Books Most Recommended By Me in 2010:
My goal of reading 100 books this year has fallen tragically short-- if I read four books by Friday, I can break fifty. But these were the creme de la creme of what I managed to get read.
The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson-- review here
If I Stay by Gayle Forman -- review here
Lips Touch Three Times by Laini Taylor-- review here
Like Mandarin by Kirsten Hubbard-- semi-review here
I think the first two are serious Printz contenders. Lips Touch was on the YALSA Top Ten list, and If I Stay was nominated for it.
Like Mandarin doesn't come out until March 2011, but I think it will be a serious Printz contender next year, and this is a good time for me to say: I know some people discount reviews from crit partners because of favoritism. I don't fangirl Kirsten's books because she's my crit partner. Kirsten is my crit partner because I respect the hell out of what she does.
Albums Most Recommended By Me in 2010:
I love a good album. Lots of bands can write a hit or two, but a beautifully crafted album that flows is a wonderful thing-- not unlike a book, actually, with transitions and individual chapters and whatnot.
Anyway, here are the five that didn't necessarily come out this year, but came into heavy rotation at my house this year.
Band of Horses - Cease to Begin
Florence + the Machine - Lungs
Grizzly Bear - Vecktamist
Lady Gaga - Fame/The Fame Monster
The National - Boxer
