Two For Tuesday: Top Ten

Kate Hart
What is it? Post two of anything: book reviews, pictures, quotes, poems, songs, videos, rants, shout outs, whatever floats your boat. Just connect them somehow. That's it.

Today: Lists. The lovely Sarah Enni has recruited a few of us to put together a few end-of-the-year lists-- not a best of 2010, per se, but a "this is what I recommended most so get with it people" kind of list. I had a wonky computer/imminent houseguests/broken brain FAIL yesterday, so today I'm combining Monday and Tuesday's topics.

Books Most Recommended By Me in 2010:
My goal of reading 100 books this year has fallen tragically short-- if I read four books by Friday, I can break fifty. But these were the creme de la creme of what I managed to get read.

Will Grayson Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan -- My review is here

The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson-- review here

If I Stay by Gayle Forman -- review here

Lips Touch Three Times by Laini Taylor-- review here

Like Mandarin by Kirsten Hubbard-- semi-review here

I think the first two are serious Printz contenders. Lips Touch was on the YALSA Top Ten list, and If I Stay was nominated for it.

Like Mandarin doesn't come out until March 2011, but I think it will be a serious Printz contender next year, and this is a good time for me to say: I know some people discount reviews from crit partners because of favoritism. I don't fangirl Kirsten's books because she's my crit partner. Kirsten is my crit partner because I respect the hell out of what she does.

Albums Most Recommended By Me in 2010:

Photobucket I love a good album. Lots of bands can write a hit or two, but a beautifully crafted album that flows is a wonderful thing-- not unlike a book, actually, with transitions and individual chapters and whatnot.

Anyway, here are the five that didn't necessarily come out this year, but came into heavy rotation at my house this year.

Band of Horses - Cease to Begin

Florence + the Machine - Lungs

Grizzly Bear - Vecktamist

Lady Gaga - Fame/The Fame Monster

The National - Boxer

Feel free to play along with us (and steal Sarah's cute 2010 graphic!)-- and be sure to check out the most recommended books and albums from Sarah Enni, Kathleen Peacock, and Cory Jackson!

  1. oh my gosh kate. you made my day.
    hugs to infinity.

  2. So jealous that you got to read Like Mandarin already! At least I won the preorder. :) And I totally agree with you about Will Grayson squared--it's definitely a must-read.

  3. I really want to read If I Stay and bets believe as soon as Pam is done with Like Mandarin I will be all over it. I haven't heard of some of your album choices, but I trust your taste, so I must check them out :)

  4. Love all your books (CANNOT wait for Like Madarin) and ALL the CDs! I had Band of Horses, too and Vecktamist is one of my favorite albums, ever ever.

  5. I loved If I Stay. And The Sky Is Everywhere is on my short list of books to buy on my next trip to the bookstore. I've only heard great things about it.

I'm sad to admit that, aside from Lady Gaga, I don't know any of those bands. I might be a music loser.

  6. I so can't wait for Like Mandarin and I love that you recommended Florence.

  7. Tracy, don't feel bad-- I get all my music recs from the aforementioned Kirsten and from Kristin Miller. Otherwise I'd still be listening to Pearl Jam's "Ten" on repeat.
