Road Trip Wednesday: Carrot and Stick

Kate Hart
This Wednesday, YA Highway wants to know: How do you reward yourself for reaching writing goals?

Oh. Um.... We're supposed to reward ourselves?

That might explain my abysmal writing progress as of late. *scowls at word count*

I dunno. When I got an agent, I had every intention of celebrating with a fancy dinner or something, but it just never happened. The BFF sent me some truffle olive oil and I think the husband bought me flowers? It's all kind of a blur. When this draft is finished, I have a copy of the last Jean Auel book and an ARC of Spoiled waiting for me, but more than anything, I'm looking forward to the relief of just being done.

Maybe I'm not a carrot kind of girl. My new goal is to finish a draft before ALA at the end of June... but I've missed several self-imposed deadlines already. Perhaps we should brainstorm sticks? INTERNET, WILL YOU HELP ME THINK OF WAYS TO HUMILIATE MYSELF? I know, I know, public embarrassment on the internet? Unheard of! But desperate times call for desperate measures.

So. I invite you to leave your punishment ideas in the comments. I draw the line at tattoos and animal cruelty. Please keep in mind that I am human and humans count as animals.

This should end well.

  2. Oh man I don't know. Maybe you should have to act out a (musical) scene from Glee via vlog? too mean? LOL.

  3. Oh good luck. I think Kaitlin's idea is especially evil.

  4. Man, it's extra-evil b/c I've only seen about five minutes of Glee and it set my teeth on edge.

    *starts practicing "Single Ladies"*

  5. Oh wow, Kaitlin suggested quite the stick.

I would say no Twitter until you get to your word count, but I enjoy your tweets. So pretend that I did not suggest that.

  6. I WANT TO SEE KAITLIN DANCE TO SINGLE LADIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or maybe sing Socks on Fire for us??? :D

Also, I was totally supposed to open this bottle of The Novelist wine when I got a book deal and forgot...so it's not just you. :)

  7. I fear the internet is an endless source of humiliation opportunities.

You could not go see the HP movie until you finish. Is that totally inhumane?

  8. Kaitlin and I have the same idea, though I was going to suggest video taping yourself singing "Tomorrow" from Annie.

Or maybe if you miss the deadline you have to do this dance in public and video tape it for us: http://youtu.be/zlfKdbWwruY

  9. Yes, a video is the way to go. And we are all your witnesses here, this binds you to the agreement ;)

  10. Even if you do meet your deadline, I would like to see the video.

  11. Ooh, I like the idea of you performing some kind of musical number. Or, since I know how much you love R. Patz, act out one of his scenes from Twilight. :)

  12. oooh, no HP til you finish--that would be motivation for sure!

  13. HA! Love the musical number idea. I like the Harry Potter one too - very evil, but wow - what a motivator.

I do self-imposed punishments/rewards until I reach my short-term goals...like no facebook until I at least have a rough of chapter ___. You'll find something that works for you. Good luck!

  14. I'm a very good nagger and have a proclivity for shaming. You just let me know.

  15. A glass or two of wine is my fallback carrot. If I ever have something really big to celebrate, I am moving onto champagne :)

  16. A video of you doing a one-person show of that Twilight graffiti? In a public restroom? In costume and with a suitably dramatic delivery?

  17. I also think the relief of just being done is enough. But the lasest Jane Auel book sounds good too.

  18. I like Kaitlin's idea.

    Good luck on your goal.

  19. Musical as mentioned above. Add a clown or twelve. Maybe you yourself dressed as a clown. I forsee things getting done quickly :P

OR, carrot...write/revise a chapter, lunch with me!!!!!

  20. You guys are so evil! I love it.

Sam, nag away, and Linds-- YES. We should do lunch regardless of my progress.
