Road Trip Wednesday: I Need a Cape

Kate Hart

*cue movie announcer voice*

TODAY, ON YA HIGHWAY, WRITERS WANT TO KNOW:

WHAT. IS. YOUR.
WRITING SUPERPOWER?

and what is your kryptonite?

Well.

This is me, just going along in my super-rad cape, leaping small plot holes in a single bound.

When suddenly...

Ack.

See, my current book has a modern story line.
And a paranormal-ish twist.
Annnnd an extensive historical backstory.
Annnnnnd I just keep finding more and more interesting stuff from the region.
Annnnnnnnnd of course there's always the fun of self-doubt, impatience, jealousy,
and the desperate desire to prove that I! am! a! WRITER!

So. I've pretty much spent the last year crushed under the weight of balancing all those. It's like braiding, only some of the hair is very fine and some is unruly and I'm not even sure how long some of it is or even where it is, much less where it's going.

 However.

*cue prematurely triumphant trumpet*

Every super hero needs a sidekick, and I have several. Say hello to ridiculously detailed Excel charts! My little friend Scrivener! Copious amounts of coffee! And of course, my partner in crime, the unbelievably supportive and helpful spouse!

  1. YES. Sidekicks are the best. Excel, SCRIVENER (what did I do before scrivener, seriously???) and awesomesauce husbands for the win :) Oh, yes, and COFFEE.

  2. Sidekicks can really save your butt. But, all butts aside... you're further along than most of us who don't yet have an agent. *jealous* You can do it!

  3. Ah yes, my awesome hubby sidekick. One day I will train him to do the laundry. :)

  4. Love the pictures! Leap those plot holes!

  5. Sidekicks! I didn't even think of that. Genius.

  6. Scrivner? I feel I need to google (aka spend more time on internet instead of writing). Sidekicks are so awesome. I have a whole entourage of hubby, toddler (who gives her quiet support by taking naps), and awesome mom who babysits.

Excel scrambles my brain. Though my CP seems to find them helpful. I need a good old pen and paper or else I can't think straight.

  7. Sidekicks rock and so do spreadsheets (or tables in Word, which is what I do). I have a free Scrivener trial that I'm trying to wrap my brain around. Is it worth it?

  8. Awesome.

My BF is more like, "Honey, I'll go buy the take out."

Love the analogy. I'm so with you on that one.

  10. My writing super powers: Drinking. Tweeting. Listening to Florence + the Machine LIKE A BOSS.

My handy sidekicks are pretty much just MS Word, a wordcount calendar I made in Excel, and all my lovely Twitter followers who indulge my procrastination!

I could get a cape, I suppose... but do you have any vodka?
