Badass Ladies You Should Know: Geneva Barton

Geneva Barton is another badass lady I've found thanks to Tumblr. From portraits to logos to character inspirations, her colorful digital artwork draws inspiration from the things around her: flowers, food, other artists, and of course, the need for more representation of women of color.

Kate: Describe your career(s) and/or current projects. What path(s) and passions led you there?

Geneva: I’m currently an employed full time artist who is transitioning to all freelance soon. The jump is going to be scary, but probably amazing. I don’t have any current projects now but hoping to launch a Kickstarter for a book project later this year. From teenagedom I made up my mind to make a career out of drawing in some way, shape or form. It feels like the only real thing I have been “good” at growing up.

Kate: Do you have any (other) creative outlets? How do they influence/affect your main work (if at all)?

Geneva: I love cooking and baking. Maybe that is why some artworks have been food based? I’m not sure, but cooking really eases my mind after a long work day, to get started for drawing afterwards.

Kate: What's your biggest challenge?

Geneva: Growing. It feels like I have been growing artistically at a much slower pace lately. It could just be life, with so many responsibilities that have to get done now.

Kate: What's the best compliment you've ever gotten?

Geneva: “Thanks for the representation/inspiration.” There are those comments especially that explain someone’s daughter/friend/cousin/etc has more confidence from looking at my art because they feel represented. It’s amazing. Growing up there wasn’t a lot of black girl rep (and I’m in my 20’s, so not long ago, which is crazy) so I’m happy to fulfill at least a minute amount of that gaping hole that we need.

Kate: What are the best ways to support other women?

Geneva: Be an example that other women can follow and be willing to lend a helping hand.

Kate: What is your advice to aspiring badasses?

Geneva: Just keep going and do good work! If your gut’s telling you something is a good idea, try rolling with it.
